Something To Ponder
A Chinese proverb tells of a wise farmer who had an old horse for tilling his fields. One day the horse escaped into the hills and when all the farmer's neighbors sympathized with the old man over his bad luck, the farmer replied, "Bad luck? Good Luck? Who knows?"
A week later, his horse returned with a herd of wild horses from the hills and this time the neighbors congratulated the farmer on his good luck. His reply was, "Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?"
Then, a week later, when the farmer's son was attempting to tame one of the wild horses, he fell off its back and broke his leg. Everyone thought this was very bad luck. Not the farmer, whose only reaction was, "Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?"
A week later, the army recruiters marched into the village and conscripted every able-bodied youth they found there. When they saw the farmer's son with his leg broken they let him off. The neighbors came over rejoicing, "Your son's been saved; what good luck!" The wise farmer replied, "Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?"
There's an important point here! The point is NOT that we don't know what will happen next week...we don't need a story to make that point .... it's obvious. In fact, we don't know what will happen the next day .... or even the next minute!
The point of the parable is that we don't know RIGHT NOW! Is it good? Is it bad? Who knows?! So stop judging, evaluating and trying in vain to decide whether everything in our lives is good or bad.
The parable challenges us to let God be God. Trust God to do the judging and scorekeeping. Good luck or bad luck? Who knows? Let go. Let God. It's called faith .... or is it hope .... or is it love? Who knows?
